1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour #540 - Aurora Borealis on Snowmobile

1001 Places/Experiences to See or Savour After Remission #540

- Aurora Borealis on Snowmobile, Kiruna

(We were determined to catch the Northern Lights here in the Arctic. So we signed up for this Aurora Hunting on Snowmobile trip - at U$220 per head, it wasn't cheap, but hey, we are only here once. Roger, our guide, brought us to the Mattarakkah Hotel for our dinner first at 7pm - a local salmon potato soup, which was deliciously prepared. Body warmed up, we slipped into thick arctic clothings and boots, and off we went on the snowmobile. The ride itself was a new and a -13C cold experience - but we enjoyed it a lot. At a forest clearing some 6kms away from the hotel and in pitch darkness, we saw our 1st Aurora Borealis! It was a full-blown new sensation, as your eyes see it for the first time. Green, with streaks of purple on the side. Roger duly took photos of it, with us in front of his camera. Bucket-list item, done!)
